The Texas Compulsory School Attendance Law requires that all students attend school from ages seven to seventeen. The Visiting Attendance Teacher is authorized by state law to investigate all unexcused absences or any excessive absences and to enforce the Compulsory School Attendance Law.

Fleming Middle School participates in Constable Trevino Truancy Program. Absent students names are turned in daily and will be visited by a constable the evening of the day(s) of absences.

Regular and punctual attendance is mandatory for all students. During school hours, students are expected to be in the classroom or other assigned areas. Off campus passes may be obtained from administrators or nurse.

A student who has been absent must, upon return to school, present promptly to the first class teacher a written excuse from the parent/guardian. In case of tardiness for the school day, the student must bring a written excuse from his parent/guardian the same or the following day. A STUDENT ENTERING SCHOOL AFTER THE FIRST INSTRUCTIONAL HOUR IS OVER MUST CHECK IN THROUGH THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE.

No student is permitted to leave school during school hours without a justifiable excuse in writing or by telephone from his parent/guardian. The first hour teacher should sign written excuses and send to the attendance clerk, who will notify attendance office before leaving the building. Parents/guardians must come into the building and provide proper identification before a student will be allowed to leave.

When student becomes ill at school, he/she should report to class and request permission from the teacher to visit the school nurse. The parents/guardian will be notified and the student will be sent home. NO STUDENT WILL BE PERMITTED TO GO HOME WITHOUT PARENTAL PERMISSION AND APPROVAL FROM THE NURSE OR AN ADMINISTRATOR.

Fleming Middle School operates on a closed campus system. This means that all students will remain on campus at lunch. Also, once on campus, students need authorization to leave. If a student rides a HISD bus and has already reported to school, the student may not leave campus without proper authorization.

A student is tardy if he/she is not in his/her assigned seat in the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Unexcused tardies will cause him/her to be assigned after school/Saturday detention.

All students are expected to eat lunch at school, preferably the hot lunch with milk prepared in the cafeteria. Lunch may be brought from home. Students are to line up politely for lunch: no running, shoving, or cutting in line. Students shall leave the cafeteria promptly, placing their rubbish in the proper containers. Lunches should not be taken out of the cafeteria unless written permission has been given.

At the beginning of the school year an application is given to each student to take home to your parents in order to apply. This application is to be completed, signed and returned to school immediately.

Students unofficially on campus after 4:00 P.M. may be arrested for loitering.

In order that lost articles may be returned to their rightful owners, write your name and homeroom on all of your personal belongings. Keep an identification card in your purse or wallet. Do not bring large sums of money or valuable items (jewelry, electronic toys) to school. Lost and found is located in the Main Office. All articles or books found should be turned in to an assist principal. The Lost and Found room will be open during scheduled times. All items will be maintained in lost and found for a limited time only.

If it is necessary to bring money to school, it is your responsibility. You are responsible for all personal belongings. Neither the school nor teachers will be responsible for any student’s personal belongings. However, if you lose any item, inform the appropriate personnel immediately.

You have a responsibility to use computers properly. This means that computers should not be used to access or create materials that do not belong at school. This includes, but is not limited to, images and messages that are sexually explicit, grotesquely violent or seek to demean or harass others. Please beware that the privileges of computer use depends on your ability to use them properly. You may lose that privilege if you are unable to act responsibly. Failure to abide by these rules could mean disciplinary action.

1. Be present and on time
2. Bring learning tool everyday
3. Respect self, others and their property
4. Be prepared to actively participate DRESS CODE POLICY

Student shall dress appropriately for school in the school uniform of red, white, or blue polo style shirts and navy, or khaki bottoms.

Students are not permitted in the halls during class without an official hall pass. Hall sweeps will be conducted on a periodic basis. They may or may not be announced. This means that teachers will close their doors as soon as the tardy bell rings and detention slips will be issued to all students who are not in class.

Each student will receive a textbook for the subject(s) taken. Parents are required to check out a set of books. Students are responsible for proper care and prompt return of all textbooks issued. If student owe for a textbook from the previous school year, he/she will NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE BOOKS HOME.

The grade in each subject is an average of all work done in that subject. Each semester has three 6-weeks grading periods. Middle school report cards will use a numerical grading system.

90-100=A
80-89=B
75-79=C
70-74=D
BELOW 70=F

A student receiving an “incomplete” for a grading period has until the end of the next grading period to raise his/her grade from an “Incomplete” to an earned mark. If the work is not completed, the “incomplete” becomes an F. “Incompletes” are not permitted the last six(6) weeks of the year.

Conduct marks are very important in middle school and are given in each class. The conduct mark includes such personal traits as attitude, participation, responsibility and punctuality. Attitude means to cooperate with the teacher and other students at all times. Participation means to enter in to the class activities and discussion. Responsibility means to do the task assigned and if necessary to find some tasks to do without being told. Punctuality means to be in class on time with appropriate books, supplies and assignments ready.

If a student is unable to attend school due to illness (for three or more days), the student may want to complete the school work at home. The student or parent may call the appropriate grade level counselor to ask for class assignments. The student must arrange to have someone pick up the assignments from the counselor. (The counselor’s phone number is (713) 671-4170.) NOTE: Students absent for a long period of time may have a Homebound Teacher assigned to them. Please see the counselor when a special need occurs.

“Notice of Progress” forms will be sent by the teachers to parents/guardians of all students who are dong unsatisfactory work. However, we believe in positive reinforcements therefore, all parents will be notified in some form. Forms must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the teacher immediately. We celebrate success!

Each teacher is assigned a conference period as part of his or her assignment. One of the purposes of the period is to give the teacher a scheduled time for conference with parents. Parents are encouraged to contact the grade level counselor who will maintain an appointment schedule for all teachers. Parents should feel free to call for an appointment concerning any phase of the student’s progress in class.

Students with excused absences will be given the opportunity to make-up work. All work shall be done under the supervision of a teacher before or after school hours. It is the student’s responsibility to ASK for homework and assignments missed because of absences and to complete that work within a reasonable time.

Fleming Middle School is committed to providing each student with a quality educational program. This requires that the school environment be free of disruptions, which interferes with the educational process. Students are expected to behave in an acceptable manner, observing all district and school regulations. Specific policies and procedures regarding the responsibility of the school, teachers, parents and the students, as well as the consequences of inappropriate behavior, are calibrated in the Code of Student Conduct. All parents and students are encouraged to become familiar with the information. Each student must do his/her part to provide an environment conducive to learning for all children.

The Alternative to Suspension Center is part of the alternative school program. It addresses misbehaviors that are “treated” in ISS and focuses on those skills which, if lacking, will keep students from being productive learners. ISS is a concentrated intense effort to improve the attitude of the student toward school through the use of motivational techniques, organizational skills, good study habits, parental support and goal setting. The center is: • Self-contained and strict uniform reinforced • Independent study oriented • Limited to maximum of 20 students • Operated on a 3 day cycle with an incentive system for early release • Other alternatives to suspension are after school and Saturday detention or Community Service COUNSELORS The counselors help enroll students and schedule their classes. They are available to students on an individual basis whenever the student has a problem. They have information concerning careers, employment and educational opportunities. To see the counselor or CIS personnel, you must: • Obtain a permit either from your classroom teacher or counselor • Upon completion of your conference with the counselor, you must return the permit, signed by the counselor to your classroom teacher. NOTE: You are responsible for making up all class work during your absence.

The nurse is in the clinic daily except during second lunch. The clinic is located in the main administrative office. TO VISIT THE CLINIC, STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PERMIT, NURSE’S REFERRAL AND/OR HALL PASS FROM THEIR CLASSROOM TEACHER OR ADMINISTRATOR. The policy of the Board of Education does not authorize school personnel to give medication of any kind unless a physician has prescribed it for the student. All prescribed medications are to be taken in the nurse’s office. The nurse will provide a permit for the student to go to the clinic to take long-term medication after the proper forms are completed by the parent and physician.
