Creative dramatics allow students to create characters, scenes or plays, and to perform them with improvised, as well as rehearsed dialogue and action. Plays and musicals on the big stage, and experimental projects in a more intimate arena, allow students to learn all the aspects of a theatrical production. Oratory, pantomime, acting, lighting, sound, costuming, makeup, set design and technical theater and prop making are taught. All of these activities enhance the basic skills of reading and speech, and promote high self-esteem. Theatre Arts students compete in many speech and drama tournaments throughout the year in H.I.S.D. and other school districts. The annual trip to New York City is open to all theater students.

The class piano curriculum attempts to increase the total development of each pupil, contributing to his/her emotional, intellectual and artistic growth. This program provides the opportunity for students to read music, improvise melodies, compose short musical phrases, and learn music fundamentals through lessons. Educational studies have proven that training in music can enhance academic success as well as cultivate deeper enjoyment of music. Students are trained on full sized digital Roland keyboards with headphones, enabling individual or group communication between students and teacher. Students can record their projects on these pianos for future playback.

The gymnastics program stresses over- all physical fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and self- confidence. Students are encouraged to participate in all of the men’ or women’s gymnastics events. There are several opportunities for the students to compete against other H.I.S.D. schools, and the year culminates with the City Meet, held every May. We are the only school that has a previous United States Olympic team member/competitor as a teacher!

The dance component of the program is designed to help students learn to express themselves creatively through movement. Emphasis is placed on physical discipline and artistry. Students enrolled in the dance program are given a background in ballet, tap, modern and jazz dance, as well as dance history, Labanotation, terminology, kinesiology, biomechanics and computerized technology. Formal concerts and other performing opportunities allow students to demonstrate their accomplishments and skills. Annually, dance students have the opportunity to take master classes in New York City, the Houston Jewish Community Center, SPA, S.H.S.U. and H.C.C.
